Artist’s Statement I have always had a passion for drawing and painting. Perhaps even more than this I am compelled by some inner force to somehow convey our three dimensional world into a believable two dimensional form, which if all the vital ingredients of inspiration, skill and that indefinable something are present may lead to a successful result. The overwhelming inspiration for my work is light. I especially love the challenge of chasing this changeling and trying to express its ephemerally through paint. My aim is to capture a moment which may never exist in quite the same form again. A painting either ‘sinks or swims’ at its first execution - it rarely gets a second chance! To achieve this I prefer to work directly in front of the subject for the shortest time needed to catch this elusive quality. The immediacy of the pastel medium suits this purpose for me. My most recent work is involved with exploring colour by building up layers of primary colour, rather than relying on ready made blends. I am also experimenting with the rich and varied effects that can be created through mixed media.
