Albert Pile F.R.S.A., S.G.A.  1882 -1981

Albert Pile was a prolific artist who was born in London but on retirement came to live in Yorkshire where he spent many years in Whitby. He spent much time drawing the town and its surrounding areas. Although he painted and sketched purely for his own pleasure his works were exhibited in London and Paris. During the Second World War he was a Commisioned War Artists in London.  Albert was keen to record change and therefore spent much time locally, sketching in Whitby, recording parts of the old town before they were knocked down. His work is much sought after and could be an investment. Since his death his work has been sold at auction at Christies (London) in three catalogue sales.

Donald Kane 1908 - 1988

Donald Kane worked in a bank, and, after serving in the R.O.A.C. during the Second World War, became interested in art. he went to evening classes in Keighley and on being moved to Huddersfield joined their Art Society. he continued his interest in art work whilst in Workington and because he had always loved the area around Whitby, retired to High Normanby, above Robin Hood's Bay in 1968. he was accepted into the Fylingdales group of Artists and became a committee member and treasurer, serving on selection and hanging committees. For twelve years he enjoyed retirement - drawing, painting, walking and socialising with friends. he met Donald Midgely weekly and went drawing with Albert Pile, with whom a Christmas Day sketching trip became a tradition. In 1981 he suffered a severe stroke and was unable to draw or paint. he and his wife moved to Oxenhope near Keighley (West Yorkshire) and he died in 1988.   (Written by his son Gavin Kane in March 2000).

Drawing is of central importance to my work, both in making preliminary sketches and during the painting process. By investing a lot of time in design drawings, I am able to explore and refine the structure of the composition. Whether painting landscapes, interiors or people, I work for the most part from direct observation, in mixed media, soft pastel and oils. The experience of space, and unusual juxtapositions of shape, colour and texture are constant preoccupations. I seek to record  exceptional and beautiful qualities in apparently ordinary subjects.

Exhibitions: Laing Competition, Mercer Gallery, Harrogate and Mall Galleries, London;  Print Open., R.W.F.A., Bristol Art Gallery; Silver Longboat Exhibition, Darlington Art Gallery and Oslo, Norway. At the Mall Galleries, London: National Print Exhibition; New English Art Club;  Pastels Today, Pastel Society; Royal Institute of British Artists.
